The New Era
by Jonathan Harrington, 2001.There will be days, I'm sure,
when the birds will sing again.
The laughter of children will ring
among playgrounds,
and the trees will lift their leafy heads
from their despair.
There will be days of great joy
and as always days of sorrow.
Lovers will love in the wet grass
like Adam and Eve did before.
I'm certain all these things will happen
in this new era
we entered Tuesday.
Someday learned historians
on panels at conferences in distant cities
will name us.
They will call our epoch "The Age of Terror,"
or "The Middle Age of Fear", or perehaps
something like "The second Dark Age."
That is their burden
and their destiny.
But all of these days are still ahead of us,
these days of singing birds and laughing children,
and scholar drowsy among library shelves.
I am certain they will come-
these days of distant terror and of beauty-
that right now we call tomorrow.yea.
That day is still considered tomorrow.
even if it has been 7 years.
